DIY Wrap Skirt - EASY!

DIY Wrap Skirt - EASY!

Do you have some fabric laying around you don't know what to do with? Make it into an easy wrap skirt! It's a great way to recycle leftover fabric and create a little project that promotes sustainability!
I made some bedding earlier this year (I'll do a tutorial on that later! and take a picture once our bedroom is a little more put together), had about 48" of fabric left and I wanted to figure out a way to wear it. I also had some macrame ribbon left that paired perfectly.
I played around a bit with it on my mannequin and found it was the perfect amount for a skirt.

So here's what you'll need:
  • Your fabric. I had a 48" x 52" piece leftover and that worked for me. Make sure you measure it against your body before you start!! The longer side fit around my waist while the shorter side worked for my height.
  • Ribbon for the wrap-around. I had a 78"scrap that worked for my size. Make sure this has some texture so it doesn't slip & you show people what you don't want them to see.
  • Ribbon for the front detail (optional). Make sure it is at least the length of the skirt. Mine was 56" so I just folded it when I sewed it to the 48" side of the skirt.
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron/steamer
Let's get started, shall we?
Step 1: Iron out/steam your fabric piece. Make sure it's the right size for you and trim accordingly. You'll want the wrap skirt to cover your front twice so that you're covered when you walk around.
Step 2: Layout your square and pin the raw edges. Sew them with your machine so the edges are clean and don't fray.

Step 3. Pin your ribbon tie and your front ribbon detail. Make sure the ribbon tie is centered so it wraps correctly around you. Sew them together.

Step 4: Trim the threads and you're done! Make sure it wraps and fits correctly.

Here's a little video where I explain what I did.

Enjoy! Show me your wrap skirts! I'd love to see.
